I picked up my daughter from school one day to find parents discussing what animal their child was going to be in the Christmas play. I was probably one of the few filled with excitement because I like dressing up and I felt fairly confident I could conjure up something that would resemble a sheep or a donkey. It seemed word had already got out to the teacher that I was a bit creative because my child was going to be a chicken. Sophie and I chatted on the way home about what chickens looked like and how we were going to make a chicken costume. I don't remember the exact conversation but when asked what colour a chicken was Sophie replied 'I want to be a rainbow chicken'.

Well my daughter has always had her own creative vision, painting with her feet, mixing up the playdoh colours ( I know, I've come to terms with that one). Anything that seems normal and sensible is wrong and she will do it a different way. If she wants to be a rainbow chicken, then challenged accepted, you shall be a rainbow chicken!

I found inspiration from a clever lady who made a bird costume for her daughter. There's a really easy template too: llevoelinvierno.blogspot.co.uk

Now for my attempt, and lots of colourful feathers to cut out, pin and sew in place.

Sophie tried it on for size, it needed some extra ties round her wrists.

We also glued feathers to a tutu, and our little elf joined in the fun during the night.

I tied some feathers together and wove them through Sophie's french plait. This was really tricky and I was glad the TV was on to distract Sophie to sit still long enough but the feathers did a great job of hiding the messy bits.

Finally our brilliant girl in her costume after the Christmas concert

The concert was called 'Christmas with the aliens'. Aliens crash landed and the children had to explain what Christmas was all about.

One final thought to remember, don't just be a chicken, be a rainbow chicken!
